History and Organization of the American Contract Bridge League
- The American Contract Bridge League, formed in 1937, is a not-for-profit organization that serves approximately 160,000 duplicate bridge players throughout the United States, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico and many U.S. bases overseas.
- ACBL conducts three North American Bridge Championships, sanctions approximately 1,100 regional and sectional local tournaments, publishes laws of duplicate and rubber bridge, and ranks players by awarding masterpoints. It serves as an arbitrator in controversies over play of the game. Through membership in the World Bridge Federation, ACBL participates in conducting annual world championships and cooperates with organizations in countries around the world to promote bridge and standardize rules of play. ACBL promotes games at club, unit, district and national levels for humanitarian purposes. It publishes a monthly magazine, The Bridge Bulletin, and sells a wide variety of bridge products and books. ACBL trains teachers, publishes teaching manuals and oversees the activities of more than 3,200 bridge clubs.
- At the national headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, ACBL employs approximately 95 full-time and part-time employees. Those full-time employees are offered benefits which include a group plan health insurance, group life and accidental death or dismemberment insurance, cafeteria plan, 401(k), educational assistance, employee assistance programs (EAPs), employee discounts and free membership to ACBL. Even though ACBL is not a large employer, our overall employment package is competitive in the job market of today.
