Halladay Motors
Halladay Motors
Cheyenne, Wyoming
Tim Joannides purchased Halladay Motors from Carl Halladay Jr. in 1993. Carl Jr.'s father, Carl Halladay Sr., opened the Cheyenne Dealership in October 1944 as the Oldsmobile dealer and took on the Cadillac franchise in 1945, shortly after auto production resumed after World War II. He acquired the GMC Truck franchise in 1950.
Prior to settling in Cheyenne, Carl Sr. had spent 20 years with General Motors Corporation. Initially, he worked as a test engineer at the General Motors Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. He worked his way up there, eventually becoming a top executive in the sales division of that facility. The second half of his GM career was with the Oldsmobile Division working with dealers in several Eastern and Midwestern cities. His last GM job was with the Oldsmobile gun school in Lansing, Michigan.
Carl Halladay Jr. joined his father full time in the dealership in 1964. That year they also took on the Datsun/Nissan franchise. In the years preceding Datsun, they tried several other imports, including Renault, Hilman and Land Rover. Carl Jr. worked side by side with his father until his death in 1982. Together they built one of the finest and most respected dealerships in the state. They both received the coveted TIME Magazine Quality Dealer Award nomination for Wyoming.
Tim Joannides acquired a family business and, like Carl Halladay Sr., has included his son in he dealership operation. Chris Joannides recently graduated from the National Automobile Dealers Association's Dealer Academy in Washington, D.C., and is currently the Vice President and General Sales Manager for the dealership.
Tim was instrumental in the 1992 acquisition of the Suzuki franchise and subsequent vehicle sales that place Halladay Motors in the top ten Suzuki dealerships in the nation. He obtained a Medium Duty Truck franchise from GMC in 1995 and was appointed as Wyoming's exclusive GM Certified Used Car Dealership in 1998.
Tim began his automotive career in Illinois where he also attended Bradley University. He gained excellent experience working for top dealers in that state and in Arizona prior to coming to Cheyenne in 1983. He believes strongly in employee enthusiasm as a means of delivering top-notch service. In the words of his philosophy statement, "Customers are never an interruption to work, but the purpose of it." Under Tim's leadership of customer-friendly policies such as extended customer service hours, overnight fleet vehicle maintenance and hassle free vehicle purchases, the dealership received the GMC Truck Leaders of Distinction Award in 1997 and 1998 and the Oldsmobile Elite Award for those same years.
Tim was recently selected for the distinguished TIME Magazine Quality Dealer Award and will represent Wyoming at the upcoming National Auto Dealers Convention in Orlando, Florida in January 2000.
Tim is very proud of his Greek heritage as indicated by the gold pin he wears daily. His father, who was a successful insurance businessman, emigrated from Cyprus in 1930 and married an American born Greek. Jennie Joannides, Tim's mother, currently live in Cheyenne.
The dealership moved to its modern 1- acre facility on Westland Road in Cheyenne in 1978. Previously, it had operated at four downtown locations: Central Avenue in 1944, 18th Street and Capitol Avenue in 1945, and two East Lincolnway addresses, beginning in 1947 and 1955 respectively. Halladays opened their Bargain Corner Used Car and Truck Sales Outlet on the corner of Westland Road and Lincolnway in Cheyenne in January of 1997.
"Halladay Motors has always been a local, family owned and operated business," Joannides says. "My son Chris and I are proud to be able to continue the tradition that the Halladay family established and we are especially excited about opening our newest sales location, Halladay Motors Used Cars and Trucks - Scottsbluff." Located at 604 S. Broadway (across from Safeway) in Scottsbluff, NE Halladay Motors will be offering the same quality and selection of used vehicles and the same friendly courteous service that their customers have enjoyed in Cheyenne since 1944. "Having recently moved our Scottsbluff location manager Jeff Wheeler and his family to Gering, Nebraska, we are all looking forward to being active community partners and be able to provide the Halladay Difference: in serving the people in the Scottsbluff/Gering area and surrounding communities" says Chris Joannides.
