Newton Medical Center

Newton Medical Center

Newton, Kansas

Our Beginnings

Newton Medical Center is an 103-bed, not-for-profit facility dedicated to providing health care services to residents of Harvey and surrounding counties, regardless of race, color, sex, age, religion or ability to pay.

Offering a wide variety of services and professional specialties, the medical center is conveniently located off I-135 in south Newton, accessible to Harvey and Sedgwick counties. To help you find your way easily, we've provided directional and campus maps.

Formed in 1988, Newton Medical Center has evolved from an established tradition of excellence.

More than a century ago, Dr. John T. and Lucena Axtell founded Newton's first hospital, Axtell Hospital. For four decades, the Axtells served the community until they bequeathed their hospital to the Kansas Christian Missionary Society. At that time, the name was changed to Axtell Christian Hospital, a Christian Church / Disciples of Christ organization.

At the turn of the century, The Reverend David Goerz and Sister Frieda Kaufman founded Bethel Deaconess Hospital as a mission of the Mennonite Church. Mennonite deaconesses remained involved with the hospital's operations until 1983.

On January 1, 1988, the two hospitals officially merged to become Newton Medical Center, now located on a 74-acre campus that offers medical clinics, an employee child care center and other amenities. About 40 physicians serve on the active Medical Staff.

For your convenience, we offer direct-dial phone numbers to major departments within the medical center. We welcome your inquiries and will be happy to answer your questions.
