Nature Of Work
This is professional, psychiatric nursing and leadwork providing care, monitoring the mental and medical stability of clients in an emergency or crisis stabilization unit/facility, serving as team leader or shift supervisor to other program staff. Work involves responsibility for administration of emergency medication, overseeing monitoring of clients, guiding treatment team in the implementation of treatment plans, and documentation of client medical and mental status in compliance with regulatory standards.
Essential Functions Of Work
(May perform one or more of the following sets of duties)
- Acts as charge nurse or shift supervisor of an emergency or crisis stabilization unit; assists treatment team in implementing treatment plans; oversees daily operations in absence of supervisor; schedules staff; trains and guides other unit staff; updates policies and procedures; prepares shift reports and charting on client behavior; maintains safety of clients and unit; intervenes and assists as needed.
- Provides quality nursing and emergency care to clients; properly administers emergency and prescribed medication and injections; observes client behavior; performs initial and ongoing physical and mental health assessments; documents results and performs treatments as needed; takes vital signs on clients; draws blood, collects specimens; ensures protection from bloodborne pathogens by adhering to safety and environmental infection control policies and procedures.
- Consults with doctors, psychiatrists, pharmacists regarding client needs; advises of unusual laboratory results; prepares lab orders and maintains lab log and other documentation.
- Prepares and administers medication; receives medication/drugs from pharmacy, counts and verifies with statement, observe reactions to medication; charts and maintains records of all medications; logs and secures narcotics; monitors consumption.
- Maintains records and statistics for quality assurance and other purposes.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Requirements Of Work
(Graduate Nurses encouraged to apply)
- Possession of an Associate's Degree in nursing, completion of clinical program in nursing and licensure as a registered nurse with one year's experience in psychiatric nursing environment preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
- Knowledge of the basic principles, methods, practices, and procedures of providing nursing care. Knowledge of principles, methods, practices, and procedures for administering medications.
- Knowledge of principles, methods, practices, and procedures for administering first aid and CPR. Knowledge of therapeutic and psychotropic drugs and narcotics.
- Ability to draw blood and collect specimens correctly and safely ensuring protection from bloodborne and airborne pathogens by adhering to safety and environmental infection control policies and procedures.
- Ability to quickly assess situations and use sound judgement in applying medical or emergency intervention techniques.
- Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with clients, other employees, professionals, and the general public.
- Ability to train and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to handle verbally and/or physically abusive and aggressive clients and utilize aggression control techniques to ensure the safety and well being of the client, other clients, and employees in the unit.
- Ability to communicate effectively with mentally ill, emotionally disturbed clients.
Necessary Special Requirements
- Possession of a current Registered Nurse License.
- Possession of a valid Florida driver's license, proof of personal automobile insurance, and have acceptable driving record if required to drive Act vehicle and/or use personal vehicle for Act business.
- Complete State of Florida mandatory security screening program within five (5) working days of employment if direct contact with children/adolescents may be involved. Complete Aggression Control Techniques, CPR, First Aid and AIDS training during the first six (6) months of employment and updated as required.
