Provide support for designing and building tools, jigs and fixtures used in manufacturing. Requires strong SolidWorks skills and the ability to work with Engineers, Operators and vendors to design and build a wide variety of tools, jigs and fixtures. Designers need to be creative and informed as they use new technologies and ideas to improve the manufacturing process.

  • Work closely with, often under the direction of, Manufacturing Engineers. Independent work to take a design for new product and create the needed tooling and fixtures. This can include simple fixtures to hold components, all the way up to entire manufacturing cells incorporating PLCs and robotic elements.
  • Create SolidWorks models as part of the design cycle, with the intent of producing manufacturing tools & fixtures meeting the quality and productivity needs. Produce the needed drawings to support the design/build effort. Work within the Document Control practices to properly document work.
  • Requires a strong working knowledge of SolidWorks and all the enhancements necessary to effectively complete assignments.
  • Draw up requests for quotes as needed. Working with vendors to insure that the purchased parts and materials meet the design’s requirements. Work with RB Royal personnel to verify that the tools & jigs meet the part’s safety, quality and productivity design needs.
  • Assist manufacturing personnel when implementing the new tools and in documenting the training and job instructions needed to use those new tools. Serve as a member of multi-disciplinary teams working on improvements and new part introduction.
  • Maintain the Engineering Change Request (ECR) system and aid in the swift evaluation and execution of the ECR. This will include projects which are being quoted to customers, where accuracy and timeliness will be critical.
  • Performs tolerance stack-up evaluations and other analysis, as directed by an Engineer.
  • Maintains RB Royal drawing standards.
  • Maintains integrity of electronic drawing database which includes product drawings, customer drawings and supplemental product data.
  • Work closely with shop floor operators, Engineering and Purchasing personnel, vendors and Management to support open and inclusive problem solving efforts.

  • Above average computer skills to include full range of skills in SolidWorks to be able to incorporate designs as well as the Microsoft Excel and Word programs.
  • Basic design abilities to include familiarity with the RB Royal type of product (i.e., hose and tubes) and to be able to apply design techniques to produce correct drawings that accurate depict the customer desires and RB Royal’s processes.
  • Basic clerical skills including filing, typing and telephone work to be able to perform these duties in the event of another’s absence.
  • Communication skills to be able to discuss design ideas, portray current thinking about the design, explain the meaning of drawings to those not as knowledgeable about design in an understandable way, using tact and diplomacy in all communication.


Associate degree in SolidWorks design or Engineering from 2 year college or technical school. Three years related experience with SolidWorks in support of manufacturing. Equivalent combination of education and experience which establish the capabilities described above.
