Minimum Requirements:
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma. Must possess valid state motor vehicle operator's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or currently seeking Bachelor's degree. Experience as a certified law enforcement officer may be used in lieu of preferred education qualification. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR CERTIFICATION: Be a citizen of the United States. Be at least 21 years of age. Be fingerprinted and a search initiated of state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record. Be free of felony record and this will be evident by not having a plea of guilty or having been convicted, pardoned, or otherwise relieved by a state or the federal government of a crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison. Be of good character as determined by a thorough background investigation. Be a high school graduate or have passed the General Education Development (GED) Test indicating high school graduation level. Be examined by a licensed physician and meet the minimum mandated physical requirements required by the State of Arkansas. Be examined by an individual licensed to practice psychiatry or psychology and qualified to perform such evaluations in the State of Arkansas, who after the examination makes a recommendation to the employment law enforcement agency. Possess a valid driver's license.
Job Duties:
The following list details the central job functions required of all Arkansas Law Enforcement Officers: Arrest high risk offenders. Use deadly force. Pursue suspects on foot. Execute search warrants. Operate vehicle, emergency and operate vehicle, non-emergency. Provide crowd control. Investigate traffic accidents. Pursue suspects in vehicle. Conduct searches. Conduct interviews. Search suspects/prisoners. Defuse domestic disturbances. Defuse other disturbances. Serve arrest/search warrants. Assist with disabled vehicles. Assist other emergency personnel. Use restraining devices. Use weaponless force. Use observation skills. Maintain equipment. Use non-lethal weapons. Attend practical training. Prepare and testify in Circuit Court. Relate with the public. Relate with fellow officers. Use officer presence for defusing situations. Transport persons in custody. Respond to alarms. Monitor roadways for safe travel. Write reports. Enforce criminal/traffic statutes. Assist citizens. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Upon employment as a police officer the person must successful complete an intensive basic training curriculum. This mandatory training period will be no shorter in duration than twelve (12) weeks, but may be as long as twenty-four (24) weeks. The total length of time is determined on a case by case basis and is dependent on the person's previous work experience. Upon completion of the mandatory training period, the person will be reclassified as a Public Safety Officer II, and their annual salary will increase to $33,250 annually. Officers assigned to the 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm, and 11:00 pm - 7:00 am shifts are paid an additional 5.5% shift difference.
