| CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Deputy I
Department: Sheriff`s Office
Responsible for ensuring public safety and welfare through general patrol and law enforcement duities as well as the enforcement of South Carolina laws and County ordinances. Responsible for preparing and maintaining records and reports.
Examples of Duties:
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Respond to law enforcement calls for service made by the Public and other Law Enforcement agencies
Perform general law enforcement/ patrol duties such as: assisting the public, enforcing all local and state laws, and county ordinances, property checks of residential and commercial property, investigate suspicious persons, serves warrants, apprehends and arrest suspects, assist victims, collects evidence, and process minor crime scenes.
Prepare and maintain many different records and reports such as: incident reports, case folders, activity reports, ticket audits, forensic pre log reports, booking reports, statements, evidence reports, subpoenas, warrant request, intelligence reports, and other miscellaneous inter departmental forms.
Implement all directives given by supervisors.
Maintain all issued equipment and vehicles, ensuring proper and safe operation.
Testify in all court proceedings as needed. Prepare all cases for Magistrate and General Sessions level cases. Deputy I`s present and prosecute Magistrate level cases.
Operate and show proficiency while using a variety of equipment including but not limited to: patrol vehicle, data master, mobile data terminal, police radio, in car video, firearms, stop sticks, radar, tazer, oc spray, restraining devices, fingerprint kit, camera, and telephone. Must use due regard when using this equipment to ensure safety to officers and citizens.
Transport prisoners to and from court as well as other facilities. Transport jurors to and from court. Provides transport to patients from our jurisdiction to mental health facilities within our state.
Be readily available for any significant event, 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Each Deputy I has mandatory on call days throughout the month, which will be utilized for shift shortages, employee emergencies, or incidents that would require the immediate administrative leave of an officer.
Serve and deliver warrants, summons, subpoenas and all other official papers.

Must be able to identify, secure and portect major crime scenes, and have a good understanding of the proper procedure to request assistance from other divisions of the department. Provide court security when needed. Provide funeral escorts when requested. Must interact and communicate with a wide variety of various groups such as supervisors, co-workers, medical personnel, County department heads, judicial system personnel, S.C Department of Corrections, Department of Social Services, attourneys, victims, suspects, inmates, general public, or anyone else they may come in contact with. Must provide emergency services and assistance. Make presentations and lectures to promote public safety and other activities in the department.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of high school/GED. Requires one year of experience.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess a valid certification as a South Carolina Law Enforcement Officer from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver`s License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Have thorough knowledge of the method, procedures and policies of the York County Sheriff`s Office. Have a working knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations related to the duties and responsibilities of their position. Knowledge of not only this department but of other departments and agencies. Have the ability to assist other co-workers and personnel from other departments or agencies. Skilled in law enforcement techniques and procedures. Skilled in the operation of patrol vehicles and handling of firearms. Have the ability to use independent judgment while performing routine and non-routine tasks. Have the ability to take initiative to complete their duties without the need of direct supervision. Have the ability to read and interpret crime reports, statutory law, case law and other documents that pertain to their job. Have the knowledge and ability to complete many different forms of paperwork that are applicable to their duties and can complete them within a timely manner. Have the ability to maintain effective relationships with all types of people including those within the department, in other departments, other professions and general members of the community. Have the knowledge and ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Skilled in the use of many different types of electronic equipment including: computers, in-car video systems, radio systems, cellular phones, Datamaster and other general office equipment. Have knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the profession. Have the skill to effectively use and care for the required tools and equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the profession. Have the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other department as required.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
TECHNICAL/PARAPROFESSIONAL: Work involves inspecting, measuring, or comparing to a standard; utilizing special training to perform a defined function; following standardized procedures, techniques, or procedures.
Perform clerical or manual tasks involving intensive understanding of a field, unit or division. Example: May summarize, tabulate, or format data or information, or gather data and information for later evaluation; or perform arithmetic operations including basic geometry or algebra, including computing rates, ratios and/or percents; uses or operates medium use equipment such as chain saws, mowing equipment; journeyman level trades work.
Follow complex rules or systems, using professional literature and technical reports; or enforce laws, rules, regulations, or ordinances.
Communicate using routine sentences, complete routine job forms and incident reports, or communicate routine information regarding daily activities.
Perform semi-skilled work involving some set procedures and frequent problem-solving.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USAGE
Use office machines such as copiers or calculators. Use computers for data entry; or handle hand-held power equipment or light machinery. Use computers for word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations or custom applications or operate vehicles or use firearms. Firearms, less lethal equipment, patrol vehicles, and radio systems.

Requires work involving:
Standing, walking, gripping or feeling with hands, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, tasting or smelling, under 1/3 of the time. Sitting between 1/3-2/3 of the time. Talking or hearing over 2/3 of the time. Lifting up to or more than 100 lbs 1/3 of the time. Lifting up 25 lbs over 2/3 of the time.
Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point), Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships), Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
