Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Materials Engineer/Analyst.
Responsibilities
To serve as a materials engineering resource for planning and conducting materials analyses and process R&D in support of on-going APL programs. Carry out materials analysis R&D in support of customer requirements. Develop experimental plans and carry out appropriate characterization methods to solve complex materials and processing problems. Includes physical, mechanical and thermal property determinations.
Develop new analysis methods and procedures as required to meet new application requirements. Modify standard characterization methods, fixtures, or processing procedures. Develop custom methods or processes. Analyze and interpret results, document and report results obtained for customers. Present findings to external sponsors and the technical community (publications, conference presentations, etc.) as appropriate. Assist in developing estimates and technical approaches as required to win new work. Develop new work opportunities through internal and external networking and proposals. Carry out independent technical initiatives on materials, structures and systems to support APL Programs and Business Area technology focusses.
Qualifications
Required:
B.S. in Materials or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical degree with relevant experience (1-2 years) in multiple thermal analysis techniques (DSC, TGA, DMA, TMA/dilatometry, Flash diffusivity, etc.). Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for direct interaction with customers and colleagues. Independent worker with a good work ethic and natural curiosity in understanding materials, their interaction and their applicability to different mission environments.
Desired:
3-5 years experience in performing and interpreting thermal analyses. M.S. degree with applicable research topic. Experience in mechanical testing (tensile, compressive, shear) of metals, polymers and ceramics. Ability to understand customer and mission requirements to appropriately adapt standard methods of characterization to individual situations (e.g., demonstrate technical flexibility, creativity).
