Position Summary: The surgical technologist is responsible for handling instruments supplies and equipment necessary during the invasive procedure as well as maintaining a constant vigil of the sterile field. Anticipation of surgeon needs understanding of the procedure being performed knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the procedure are additional responsibilities of a surgical technologist. Serves as a resource for others and participates in the preceptorship of students as well as staff on orientation. Understands and demonstrates commitment to the Core Values by working in harmony with all departments dealing effectively and appropriately with the constantly changing environments and supporting the goals and mission of Via Christi Regional Medical Center.
Essential Functions: Other duties may be assigned. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job. Provides a safe efficient and supportive environment for the surgical patient. Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure. Scrubs gowns and gloves. Sets up sterile table correctly with instruments supplies equipment and medications/solutions needed for procedures. Performs counts with circulator as indicated. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants. Assists in draping sterile field. Passes instruments etc. to surgeon during procedure. Prepares sterile dressings. Demonstrates proper handling of specimen. Respects patient's rights. Understands basic anatomy medical terminology and procedures. Acts as patient advocate. Identifies and communicates staff physician and patient needs. Contributes to utilization maintenance and evaluation of equipment/supplies. Participates in department call. Participates in unit based CQI program.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Graduate of a Surgical Technologist program. Current OR experience as a Scrub Tech preferred.
